English: Statue of Richard Green in Poplar Richard Green,1803-1863, was a highly-regarded local shipowner and philanthropist. He is said to have been responsible for the revival of British shipping at a time when the Americans were controlling the ocean routes with their faster vessels. The so-called 'Blackwall frigates' designed at his local shipyards challenged the American clippers for speed in the Chinese tea, and Australian wool, trades. See http://www.mernick.co.uk/thhol/seapop.html
He was also a local benefactor involved the founding of a Sailors' Home, Hospital, Orphanage and other maritime charities. The statue, outside the now-defunct Public Baths in East India Dock Road, was erected by public demand 3 years after his death. |
