English: I had the great privilege of riding a train pulled by this machine last Saturday. The Norfolk Southern Railroad takes their employees on rides behind this old Nickel Plate loco, restored by the Fort Wayne (Indiana) Railroad Historical Society. What a great (and big) job they have done, to restore her and keep her running. A "Berkshire" 2-8-4 type, she was originally built at the great locomotive works in Lima, Ohio, in 1944. The NS also has repainted a bunch of new diesels in the colors of railroads of the past, including the one you will see here painted up in Nickel Plate colors. This painting was done by a division of Caterpillar in Muncie, Indiana, near my hometown of Anderson. The Nickel Plate (really the New York, Chicago, and St, Louis) ran from Buffalo to St. Louis and Chicago, with a lot of track in Indiana and Ohio. In 1964 it was taken over by the Norfolk & Western, which later became part of the NS. Everyone at the NS should be very proud of their respect for railroad history! |
