Pier A belonged to the Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad .

The SENTINEL, 82 tons and 102 feet long, was built in 1898 by Crawford & Reid of Tacoma for use on the Hunt Brothers' Seattle - Tacoma East Pass route. In 1906 the new Merchants' Transportation Company purchased the SENTINEL for operations on Seattle-Tacoma-Vashon Island routes. In 1929 the new vessel ARCADIA replaced the SENTINEL, then in service on the upper Puget Sound, using the SENTINELs engine and boiler. (Source: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W.
