Summary
editDescriptionSteinerne-Rinne Kalktuff Rinnenwald-Lenningen Schwaebische-Alb.jpg |
English: Cascade of travertine in “Rinnenwald”, a forest in a side valley of the Lenninger Lauter (north of Lenningen), Swabian Alb. In this case with a middle gradient of the slope and small water discharge erosion is negligible, accretion dominates. The deposits are ca. 3 m high. A karst spring’s carbonate rich water runs on top and seeps downslope, depositing travertine. The sides are stabilized by living bryophyte (often “Palustriella (Cratoneuron) commutate”), once all slowly dried up and formed crust like structures. These mechanisms build up the sides, slowly raising the height, the bryophyte continuing to grow grow (for a prograded crusty condition see the photo: Image:Kalktuff-Mosscrusts.jpg). Downhill the cascade’s height diminishes continuously. |
