Summary edit

Description This shows the gearing that transmitted the power of the engine to the belt drive wheel. About 90% of the power was devoted to the wheel that powered threshers and saw mills. With only 10% of the power available for locomotion, the top speed of the engine was about 5 km/h. There was also little pulling power except for a tender (wood and water) and a threshing machine. To move the engine from Stirling to L'Amable to power saw mills took 3 days. Today, the same route can be covered in about an hour by automobile.
