Summary

edit
Description Submarine rescue chambers were used by the U.S. Navy for over fifty years as a means of saving crews of submarines stranded on the ocean floor. Inside the chambers are two compartments; an upper compartment designed to hold two operators and eight passengers and a lower compartment which mates with the stranded submarine to allow survivors to pass from the submarine?s escape hatch into the rescue chamber. The first and only operational use of a submarine rescue chamber occurred in 1939 when the USS Squalus (SS-192) accidently flooded her compartment during a test dive. Working against time and extreme depth, divers from the submarine rescue vessel USS Falcon (ASR-2) were able to attach a downhaul cable from a rescue chamber to make several trips between the submarine and the surface until 33 survivors were bought to safety.
