Description This illustration of the gunboat Sultan appeared after page 192 in the 1899 edition of Brassey's Naval Annual. The Sultan was built by order of the British Admiralty by Yarrow, Poplar and completed in February 1898. There were sister ships built by other British shipbuilders. The Sultan served as part of the Egyptian force on the Nile, with Royal Navy commanders.
