One of the TRC's most modern electric streetcars, #1034, is seen here boarding passengers at the westbound Queen St. and Teraulay (now Bay St.) stop. New in 1905, the car remained in service for nearly 20 years until it was scrapped. This photo is interesting for another reason. The rebuilt Robert Simpson store at the corner of Yonge and Queen Sts. is seen looming in the background having reopened less than a year after the original store on the same site was gutted in 1895 following a major fire that also severely damaged Knox Presbyterian Church located next door to the west. A portion of that church, with its partially rebuilt steeple, is visible in behind #1034. A new Knox opened on the west side of Spadina Ave., south of Harbord St., in 1909. The Hudson's Bay department store now covers the old church site. Also, note the "cow catcher" (officially a fender) on the front of #1034. Oh, and the year the photo was taken? Let's see #1034 entered service in 1905, Knox moved in 1909, so sometime between those years ... closest I can guess. PHOTO BY MIKE FILEY COLLECTION
