This painting depicts Empress Wu, an empress of Emperor Gaozong (r. 1127–1162) of the Song dynasty. She is seen here wearing a ceremonial robe of a dark blue color, decorated with depictions of paired pheasants and bordered with red gauze featuring dragon patterns. She is also seen here wearing a nine-dragon hairpin crown, pendants, and pearls that are on her face.
