Description

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX in the Air Battle of Malta Memorial Hangar, which houses all WWII exhibits at Malta Aviation Museum.

Spitfire Mk. IX, which entered service in mid-1942, was one of the numerous variants of the most famous British fighter aircraft used throughout the Second World War.

With the arrival of the Focke-Wulf 190 (known, with good reason, as the 'Butcher Bird') on the English Channel coast late in 1941 the RAF faced a serious problem. The new German fighter outclassed the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V on nearly every count, so the need for an improved Spitfire variant became paramount. This interim type was designated Spitfire Mk.IX and consisted of a basic Mk.V airframe married to a two-speed two-stage supercharged Merlin 61 engine. In July 1942 an early Mk IX was flown against a captured Fw-190A, and the two aircraft were discovered to have very similar capabilities. The RAF had its answer to the Fw-190 problem (at least unless the improved variants of Fw-190 entered service ;))

Spitfire Mk.IX, EN199 Mary Rose, on display at the Malta Aviation Museum, was flown in the North Africa by Wing Commander R. Berry and Squadron Leader C. F. Gray, Commanding Officer No.81 Squadron. EN199 took part in the Allied Operatoin Torch landings and the subsequent Tunisian campaign and fought until the Axis surrender on the Cape Bone peninsula.

Later EN199 was issued to No.154 Squadron which had moved from North Africa to Malta from where it took part in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. The aircraft moved to the Italian mainland taking part in further operations until the end of the war, being eventually moved back to Luqa in Malta with No.73 Squadron.
