Description
English: Swanswell Gate One of two surviving gates of the twelve original gates in the city wall[1] stands in the corner of Lady Herbert's garden by Hales Street. It was formerly Priory Gate, the private gate for St Mary's Priory to its orchards outside the wall. When Hales Street was built alongside in 1850 the gate became a dwelling house and the archway, visible here, was blocked up to give living space (it is no longer a dwelling). A grade I listed building. The slip road from Ringway Swanswell can be seen in the left background and, in the foreground, the decorative panels of the blue bridge over the garden.
