Summary edit

Description
English: Signage for Swiston's Beef & Keg Restaurant affords a touch of the old-school to the view northward along Young Street in Tonawanda, New York, as seen early in a November 2022 evening. The last of a succession of three Tonawanda restaurants owned and operated by John Swiston, Beef & Keg was founded in 1968, shortly after its predecessor (Swiston's Restaurant) fell to the wrecking ball as part of downtown Tonawanda's ill-fated urban renewal program. It's most notable historically as the subject of a 1972 State Supreme Court ruling negating the right of businesses to refuse service to males with long hair, and in the here-and-now for the brevity of its menu, which comprises only two selections: beef on weck sandwiches and homemade chili con carne. The restaurant was long furnished with antiques purchased by the owner and his wife during their frequent travels in Mexico. Swiston retired in 1984 and died in '93, but the restaurant continues in operation under its current owners, brothers Nectarios and Raymond Kollidas.
