The sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) is a member of the maples family, although the name 'sycamore' originally belongs to the fig species. Introduced in the 17th century, the tree is planted for timber production, with the wood being used for making musical instruments, furniture, flooring and parquetry. Sycamores are large deciduous trees that grow 20 to 35 metres tall, with a broad, domed crown. Young trees have a smooth grey bark which becomes rougher with age and breaks up in scales. Noted for their tolerance of wind, urban pollution and salt spray, sycamores thrive in cities and along roads treated with salt in winter as well as in areas close to the coast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_pseudoplatanus |
