Summary

Description
English: Sylvinite from the Permian of Russia.

Sylvinite is an evaporite rock principally composed of halite (NaCl - sodium chloride) and sylvite (KCl - potassium chloride). In this sample, the whitish, grayish, and bluish material is halite and the reddish areas are sylvite. Evaporites are chemical sedimentary rocks formed by the evaporation of water (usually seawater) and the precipitation of dissolved minerals. The Permian-aged sylvinite seen here is from the Solikamsk area of Russia, where potassium-rich salts, known as "potash", are extensively mined.

Stratigraphy: Upper Kama Potash Deposit (= Verkhnekamskoye Potash Deposit; = Ural Potash Deposit), Iren Formation (or Iren Horizon of the Berezniki Formation), Kungurian Stage, upper Lower Permian

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed mine at or near the town of Solikamsk, Upper Kama Basin, Perm Krai, west of the Ural Mountains, Russia
