Description

U.S. Navy Douglas TBD-1 Devastator aircraft of Torpedo Squadron 5 (VT-5) parked on the after flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5) at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California (USA), in June 1940. Three TBDs are painted in an experimental colour scheme used during exercise "Fleet Problem XXI".

Note: This section of the ship was examined when Yorktown's wreck was located in May 1998. The after 9 metres (approximately) of the flight deck were missing, but most other features seen were present, including the ship's name on her stern.
