Summary edit

Description

Located in Lake Huron, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary protects one of America's best-preserved and nationally-significant collections of shipwrecks. Nearly 100 shipwrecks have been discovered within its waters, ranging in type from an 1844 sidewheel steamer to a modern 500-foot-long German freighter. Here, a NOAA diver swims over the wreck of the Portland, a wooden schooner that sank in 1877.
