Original caption: THE THEODALITE INSTRUMENT IS for testing the wind velocity at different altitudes so the drift of shells when fired from the rifles can be computed correctly. The small rubber balloon which the private at the left of picture is holding is turned loose and readings taken of its course through the air with the Theodalite. At left of picture is private Michael Cratty, the officer at instrument is 2nd Lt. Ivan R. Tannehill, S.C., and private J.W. Strange who has the telephone receiver and transmitter ready to send readings to meteorological plotting room as soon as balloon is turned loose.
