Description

Spring Garden, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Halifax Public Gardens entrance: "A Wrought-Iron Welcome". These formal Victorian gardens, 16 acres (6.5 hectares) in size, anchor the west end of the fashionable Spring Garden neighbourhood and were established in 1874. The Gardens' first superintendent, Robert Power, laid out the lovely flower beds in a symmetrical pattern which survives today, and oversaw the installation of a myriad of statues and memorial plaques in honour of important players in Halifax history (even these gates are a tribute to the Halifax Provisional Battalion, which saw action on the frontier in the North-West Rebellion) as well as a bandstand that's still the site of free concerts every Sunday. The Halifax Public Gardens have been a National Historic Site of Canada since 1984, and were fully restored in 2004 after being badly damaged (along with Point Pleasant Park to the south) by Hurricane Juan the previous year.

Spring Garden, Halifax, Nueva Escocia.
