Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Looking eastward down Main Street from the corner of College Street, in downtown. Though it's today just another in a seemingly endless lineup of Scottish towns in Nova Scotia, Antigonish was actually founded in 1784 by Colonel Timothy Hierlihy, an Irishman originally from Ballyvourney, County Cork, and long sported a healthy admixture of Irish residents among the usual Highland Scots. The settlement, called Dorchester originally, took on its current name by the 1820s, a Mi'kmaq word of uncertain etymology. Today, Antigonish is important as a college town - St. Francis Xavier University, based here since 1855, is the third-largest university in Nova Scotia and the largest outside Halifax - and as the epicentre of the revival of the Scottish Gaelic language in Canada, which now boasts about 1,500 native speakers, many of which are products of the four immersion schools located in town. Antigonish is also historically notable as the birthplace and namesake of the Antigonish Movement, launched here in 1928 and espousing economic self-help for the poor fishing communities of eastern Canada - the extensive systems of credit unions in the Maritimes and Québec are a main part of its legacy.
