Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland. Heading westward on Route 431 from Woody Point to Trout River, I passed by the Tablelands: some 30 square miles (80 square kilometers) of flat-topped mountains towering over dusty, boulder-strewn fields, lacking greenery of any kind. The bedrock and soil of the Tablelands is made up of peridotite and other igneous rock material ejected from the Earth's mantle hundreds of millions of years ago in a violent cataclysm of plate tectonics; the iron- and magnesium-rich, highly alkaline soil is poor in nutrients and, in fact, quite toxic to most forms of plant life. This gives the Tablelands the look of a barren desert, quite a contrast to the dense forests that cover neighboring regions. |
