English: This is one of only two surviving Spitfire HF VIIIs.
This view shows the tail area and highlights the interesting combination of a retractable tailwheel and an original style 'short' or 'rounded' rudder, as opposed to the 'pointed' rudder usually found on a Mk VIII. '5501' was built in 1942 as 'JF294' and is now on display at the South African National Museum of Military History, Saxonwold, Johannesburg. South Africa. 16-9-2014 |
