Summary edit

Description
English: Muqarnas. Taj Mahal, Agra

Muqarnas ("stalactites") are the ribbing on the underside of an Islamic dome. They are seen here at the top of the photo, above the repeated "cookie cutter" outlines of missing inlay. They are used in Islamic architecture to smooth the transition between arch and dome, and have the additional effect of softening the visual texture of the stone surface.
