Title
English: Talbot Coal Company wharf and Yesler's Wharf, ca. 1878
Description
English:

In the 1870s, coal from Renton was shipped from Seattle to San Francisco. Steamers loaded with coal on the trip south returned to Seattle filled with goods for the growing city. This photo, taken around 1878, shows the pier at the Talbot Coal Company's Seattle yard. The Talbot coal pier was just one of several coal docks at the Seattle waterfront at that time. The sidewheel steamer "Dakota" is tied up at Yesler's Wharf. The "Dakota" made regular trips between Puget Sound ports and Victoria, British Columbia.

Original copy negative. Copied by Webster & Stevens.

  • Subjects (LCTGM): Coal mining; Piers & wharves; Ships; Talbot Coal Company; Waterfronts; Yesler's Wharf; Dakota (Ship);

Metadata from University of Washington Libraries at ːFile:Crawford, Harrington and Yesler's wharves looking west toward moored side wheel steamer DAKOTA, Seattle, ca 1880 (PEISER 142).jpeg strongly suggests that the pier as such was named "Harrington's" not Talbot's.
