The architectural decorationsare of the most elaborate description, the work of a cele-brated sculptor in the time of the Emperor Charles V.Considered in detail, they are of the most exquisite work-manship ; but as a whole the effect is not good, being atvariance with all our ideas of simplicity and true taste. Ina national view, however, it may be questioned how far ourown notions in this respect approach nearer than those ofthe Moors—assuredly more wild and fanciful—to the ideal ofdecorative beauty and taste. With all the extravagancesand complicated variety of their system, and to what-ever singular results it may sometimes lead, the artist, if Imay judge from his written opinions, is inclined to give thepreference to their principles, which he thinks superior totameness and uniformity. The houses which surround thePlaza Real are of great antiquity, and assort well with thegeneral aspect of the place, and with the magnificent cathe-dral by which the view is bounded.
