Description

A Tapada Real de Vila Viçosa, situada a Nordeste da cidade, terá sido inicialmente constituída por D. Jaime, 4º Duque de Bragança, em c. 1515, alguns anos depois de ter mandado erguer o magnífico Palácio Ducal. O antigo couto de caça, que originalmente compreendia a Herdade do Mato, entre as ribeiras de Borba e da Asseca, foi muito ampliado por diversos monarcas, e abarca actualmente 18 quilómetros murados, a maior parte dos quais pertencente ao concelho de Borba. No perímetro da cerca existe uma casa de fundação quinhentista, várias capelas, fontes, cursos de água, e um ecossistema muito rico, incluindo muitos javalis e veados. O alto muro envolvente é rasgado por seis portas: a Porta de São Bento, Porta da Tapada ou Porta Real, a Porta de Santa Bárbara ou Porta Velha, a Porta de Mercandela, a Porta de Santo António, a Porta do Ferro e a Porta da Albufeira, no extremo oposto à primeira. Esta, a de São Bento, servia o Paço Ducal, constituindo a entrada principal da tapada.
