| Description |
English: The Azadi Tower, literally the Tower of Freedom, is a symbol of Tehran. It marks the entrance to the Iranian capital. It was built in 1971 in order of the Shah and in commemoration of the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. It was designed by Hossein Amanat, who won a competition to design the monument. The tower combines elements of Sassanid and Islamic architecture. Amanat was driven from the country after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.
