Description |
Exterior view of second grade school (brick) building with a few children in front. Note: Education in the Rough, written by the Whitman County Retired Teachers Association as a Bicentennial Project for 1975-76, (unpaged, found under District 82) provides a history of school buildings in Tekoa, Washington as follows: The first classes in 1883-84 in the Tekoa area were held in Henry Warner’s woodshed, a building with a dirt floor. In September of 1884 the community voted to build a school, which was erected just west of Hangman Creek, in the southwestern part of Tekoa. This building became known as the “Little White School”. It was used until a large two-story frame building was built in 1891 on Tekoa’s west hill. First through tenth grades were held in this building for many years. In 1906 the eleventh grade was added. In 1907 a two-story brick high school was completed on the east hill. In 1918 a gym, assembly, library and offices were added. The two-story frame building on the west hill was used for all grades through seventh until 1927 when it was replaced with the second grade school (brick building), built in 1927 and enlarged in 1937. A new high school building was begun in 1960 and used in the fall of 1961. |
