L'ancien central téléphonique de New York, 50 North Cayuga Road (à l'angle de Glen Avenue) à Williamsville, New York. Février 2021
Summary
editDescriptionTelephone Building, Williamsville, New York - 20210202.jpg |
English: As seen in February 2021: the former New York Telephone exchange building at 50 North Cayuga Road (corner Glen Avenue) in Williamsville, New York. Exemplary of the Colonial Revival style, the building's modest ornamentation has much in common with the "stripped Classical" architecture typically utilized in telephone exchange buildings of slightly earlier vintage: the eight-over-twelve sash windows contain the small panes and are topped by the keystone-studded jack arches that typify the Colonial Revival, and the ancone motif around the entrance sees them supporting the architrave and decorating the large window directly above, but aside from those elements, simplicity and austerity is the rule. The building was constructed in 1948, an era in which dial telephone service was first being extended from Buffalo city proper into the suburbs, and it was originally one story in height with a rather steeply-pitched hipped roof. About 1953 the roof was removed, a full second story added, and a large addition placed on the rear of the building as seen at right; on the façade you can still see a slight difference in the color of the brick between the original and newer sections. The building is still owned by successor company Verizon and used for its original purpose. |
