Description
English: St Mary's Church, Conistone, Yorkshire: 1936 mural monument to the Tennant family of Chapel House, in the parish of Conistone and Kilnsey, formerly in the parish of Burnsall. Chapel House, on the site of an ancient chapel belonging to Kilnsey Grange, a possession of Fountains Abbey, was purchased by the Tennant family in 1572 (Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry, 15th Edition, ed. Pirie-Gordon, H., London, 1937, pp.2217-8, pedigree of Tennant of Chapel House). Robert Tennant (1828 – 1900) of Chapel House, was the Conservative Party Member of Parliament for Leeds, Yorkshire, from 1874 to 1880. He served as a Captain in the Yorkshire Hussars and as a Justice of the Peace for Yorkshire and for Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland in Scotland. Arms of Tennant of Chapel House: Ermine, two bars each per pale gules and sable charged with three bezants two and one (BLG; the bars are shown here as per pale sable and gules); Motto: Tenax et Fidelis ("Tenacious and Faithful"). Crest: Between two wings gules each charged with a bezant a sword erect proper pomel and hilt or point downwards transpiercing a human heart of the first. (BLG)
