Elevation: 484 m (1037 ft) Date: May 14, 2022. --- TAXONOMICAL INFORMATIONS Familia: Asteraceae Bercht. & J.Presl. Species: Tephroseris balbisiana (DC.) Holub First publication references: Synonyms: Cineraria balbisiana (DC.) Bertol.; Cineraria coincyi (Rouy) Willk.; Cineraria elodes (Boiss. ex DC.) Nyman; Senecio balbisianus DC.; Senecio coincyi Rouy; Senecio elodes Boiss. ex DC.; Tephroseris coincyi (Rouy) Holub; Tephroseris elodes (Boiss. ex DC.) Holub; Tephroseris elodes (Boiss. ex DC.) subsp. coincyi (Rouy) Aedo --- MORPHOLOGY AND FENOLOGY Life-form: hemicryptophyte. Description (T.G. Tutin, 1980): Perennial (20-)50-100 cm. Stock short, erect. Stems very stout, sparsely floccose and more or less glabrescent. Basal leaves 20-45 x 3- 5-9 cm, erect, ovate to oblong, usually rounded to cordate at base, very coarsely dentate, floccose and glabrescent; petiole 2- 4 times as long as lamina, often winged; middle cauline becoming oblong-ovate to linear-lanceolate, shortly petiolate or sessile and narrowed at base; upper cauline sessile, amplexicaul. Capitula 8-30, 25-35 mm in diameter, in a lax, sometimes compound corymb. Involucre 8-12 mm, more or less floccose-lanate at least below. Flowering: Flowering: from May to July. --- ECOLOGY AND CHOROLOGY Habitat: damp places, edges of streams, montane and subalpine tall-herbs communities on neutral to sub acid soils. Vegetation belts: montane; subalpine. Edaphic preferences: Ca/Si; Si; Ser. Chorotype: Subendemic SW-European Orophyte. Global distribution (POWO, 2022): native to Spain, France and Italy. Italian distribution (F. Bartolucci & alii, 2018): native in Piedmont, Liguria, Emilia Romagna. IUCN global Status: LC (Least Concern). Notes: the Ligurian stations of this species are limited to a small area of the Stura di Ovada river basin, roughly between Bric del Dente to the west, Monte Turchino to the east and the town of Masone to the north. The Alpine populations of Tephroseris balbisiana (DC.) Holub present in the French Maritime Alps are closely related to those of the South of the Iberian Peninsula (M. Adamo & alii, 2020), the Italian ones gradually diverge as one proceeds northwards and eastwards. The Ligurian populations appear to be rather isolated but are phylogenetically related also to the group of Tephroseris longifolia (Jacq.) Griseb. & Schenk (M. Adamo & alii, 2020). The plants of the only Emilian station (near Castiglione dei Pepoli, Province of Bologna) instead seem closely related to Tephroseris italica Holub. (M. Adamo & alii, 2020) and perhaps they should be included in this species. However, the affinity relationships between Tephroseris balbisiana DC and Tephroseris longifolia/italica group need to be further investigated (J.W. Kadereit & alii, 2021). Regional protection: yes (France and Italy). --- REFERENCES
