English: Tesco Sucks. This sign on Blaikie's Hill on the northeast side of Galashiels has recently appeared. When I walked up to take a photo it was being re-erected by the local farmer after it had been knocked down. He was also responsible for the previous nearby sign 582060. The wording on this previous sign could not be made out from the town but the new sign is large enough to be read. He is involved with the Borders Heritage at Risk Campaign (BHARC) and is still annoyed that the former Scottish Woollen Technical College was demolished to make way for the Tesco store. The Tesco store (and ASDA for that matter) has dramatically altered the appearance of the town centre 454515. At ground level the stores seem to have been accepted by the public, but viewed from the hillside where he farms, they do seem inappropriately placed within the vernacular architecture of the town centre. The story behind this sign was a front page feature in the 23/4/09 edition of the weekly local newspaper, The Southern Reporter, the day after this photograph was taken and submitted. |
