English: Thaler of the bishopric of Sion [Philippe de Platea], 1528.
c.f. F.J. Wesener, Die Gotthard Minus'sche Thaler- & Medaillensammlung (1874), no. 2608; Wöchentliche historische Münz-Belustigung 7 (1749), p. 49. The design of the coin is directly copied from the Thaler of Nicolaus Schiner (p. 285) and Matteo Schiner (p. 302) of 1498 and 1501, respectively. Philippe de Platea (c. 1470/5–1538) was vicarius of the diocese of Sion during 1520-1522, and in 1522 elected prince-bishop, but his election was contested by Rome and he was never consecrated as bishop, as he had been excommunicated for his opposition to Schiner in 1519. He resigned from office in 1529, taking up the office of sacristan of the cathedral chapter in 1532. Significantly, the legend on the obverse has electus where Schiner had episcopus, prefectus et comites, and the bishop's coat of arms shows only the sword, indicating temporal power, but is lacking the crozier. The de Platea coat of arms is shown as per bend, a fleur-de-lis and three roundels. |
