English: The "City Stadium" site, Shieldfield Originally a steep sided part of the Ouseburn valley this site was filled in with coal dust and rubbish in the early 20th century and is apparently known as the City Stadium because of plans in the 1970's, by T Dan Smith to turn this into a 90,000+ seat sporting stadium - now a green space surrounded by Heaton, Shieldfield, Sandyford and Byker. |
