English: The "beach" at Grange-over-Sands. A narrow path, Morecambe Bank, leads down from Main Street to the site of one of Grange's two piers. A plaque on the Promenade wall says that you can see the remains of the metal posts sticking out of the sand but these seem to have been engulfed by the Spartina grass and salt flats.
Grange was popular with visitors in the 1750s when crossings by coach and horses across the sands of Morecambe Bay were an exciting prelude to a visit to the Lake District, hence the name "-over-sands". Grange first came to popular prominence with the arrival of the Furness Railway, which transformed the small fishing village into a fashionable Victorian/Edwardian destination. The town quickly developed as a seaside resort. The demand for holiday facilities and retirement homes continued into the 20th century. The colonisation of Spartina anglica in the intertidal zone throughout the north side Morecambe Bay has resulted in the loss of open water and mudflats. This has been particularly noticeable at Grange since 2000. Because of the difficulty in controlling Spartina fully the people of Grange are positive about the loss of their greatest seaside amenity and are promoting the wildlife attractions of the high biodiversity of the salt marsh. And it will preserve the bizarre sight of grazing sheep where there should be sand castles. See 502430 and 502451 |
