English: The iron ship 'Gainsborough', 974 tons, moored at Gravesend, U.K. The ship built in 1866. She ran aground off Diamond Head Signal Station, Island of Molokai, as reported in the 'Hawaiian Gazette', Honolulu on 1 September 1896 after sailing from Westport in New Zealand on 23 June, without insurance, bound for San Francisco with a cargo of coal. For the previous 12 years the vessel was involved in the Australian wool trade. Captain Alexander McPhail had been her master since January 1884. [from information provided by a McPhail descendant] [iron ship, 1037 tons, ON54765, 206.0 x 31.4 x 20.4. Built 1866 Charles Lungley, Deptford (London) Owners: Merchant Shipping Co. Ltd, registered London, later Fisher and McPhail, registered London. Became 'Diamond Head' owned in Honolulu in 1899, and in 1910 was converted into an oil carrier.
