Description
English: The A46, Fosse Way. A major Roman route between Exeter in the south west and Lincoln in the east, this part of the Fosse Way is a major dual carriageway. It was built in the middle of the 1st century AD. The word Fosse comes from the Latin word for ditch (Fossa), the road taking its name from the defensive ditch which protected the western boundary of Roman controlled Britain. Taken from the layby in the centre of the square.
