Description
English: The A686 below Hartside. The descent to Alston and the South Tyne valley. The road crosses the Eden/Tyne watershed at just over 1900 feet and is consequently prone to closure in winter. This side of the pass is gentler than the western side. The picture is slightly below 599763 and taken soon after sunrise. The temperature was a few degrees below freezing but there was little in the way of visible frost. There was plenty of ice on the road caused by run-off from the previous day's rain. The road does not get gritted after dark.
