Description
English: in 1904, newspaper cartoonist Claude Shafer illustrated (and maybe wrote?) a series of humorous vignettes about the fictitious "Marmaduke Squeezledene", a baronet visiting America from the United Kingdom. There were 10 entries in the series, of which this is the first.
  • Text: 'Pon honor, I am amazed at this country. It is decidedly interesting, don't you know. I have decided to penetrate to the interior, possibly as far as Hoboken. If Stanley could endure the hardships of mid-Africa, I feel that I can brave darkest America.
The buildings here are doocid high. This country must be much smaller than Great Britain, or the people would not be so cramped for room.
So far no one has tipped his hat to me, or asked me for tuppence, except Vilks, my valet. It is plain that I am still incognito. Some small boys followed us a bit, making remarks such as, "Look at his soup strainers," "Naw, they's giggies," and "Pike off the lambrequins on the gazabee." I am going to ask some American servant about this. Probably this is some form of the Cherokee or Sioux dialect.
I have decided not to stop in New York, but go at once westward ho, to Augusta, Me., or Philadelphia. Vilks is having me luggage sent across the ferry. I have been vastly edified by my five minutes' stay in New York, but do not like the beastly climate. I long to see the Indians.
Marmaduks Squeezledene, Bart.
