ULYSSES SIMPSON GRANT, EIGHTEENTH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. GRANT UNIVERSITY —GRANVILLE by Beauregard, were driven from the field. InJanuary 1863 Grant began to assemble histroops to attack Vicksburg, but high water kepthim inactive till the following April. Corinthwas occupied on 30 May and on 3 July Pember-Ton at Vicksburg surrendered the largest bodyof troops ever captured on this continent up tothat time, and Grant became the man of des-tiny of the army. He was made commander of all the armies■of the Mississippi, and proceeded to Chatta-nooga to rescue Rosecrans and his beleagueredarmy. In a series of swift and dramatic battleslie captured Lookout Mountain and MissionaryRidge. The victory at Chattanooga opened theway for Shermans march into Georgia, andpractically closed the war so far as the Westwas concerned. In February 1864 Congresscreated and conferred upon Gen.
