Summary edit
DescriptionThe Approach to Harecastle Tunnel (Wide Angle View) - geograph.org.uk - 556249.jpg |
English: The Approach to Harecastle Tunnel (Wide Angle View) There needed to be plenty of width for narrowboats in their hundreds to moor while waiting to enter the south portal of James Brindley's tunnel (to the right of the yellow van) or Thomas Telford's (one boat waiting today).
Basic history of the tunnels can be seen here: http://www.waterscape.com/in-your-area/staffordshire/places-to-go/214/harecastle-tunnel On a more sinister note: observe the large mounds of Japanese Knotweed which have been allowed to become established by the moorings on the left. These need urgent attention; they spread VERY quickly, and the roots can go more than three metres deep. |
