Summary edit
DescriptionThe Arms of Scunthorpe - geograph.org.uk - 561582.jpg |
English: The Arms of Scunthorpe. Plaque on the Plowright Theatre 554437 built in 1958 as the Scunthorpe Civic Theatre. The Scunthorpe Borough Council Coat of Arms (1936-1996) is a tribute to the iron and steel making which shaped the town. The two shells represent the fossil common to the Frodingham Ironstone; the five links, the five original villages; and the wheat, the agricultural heritage. At the top is an open topped blast furnace. The motto (not included on this plaque) is "the heavens reflect our labours" refers to the night time illumination of the sky from the practice of tipping molten slag onto embankments to dispose of it. |
