The two-decker ships in this vigorous pencil sketch are not identified. However the sketch may be compositionally related to an oil painting of Gambier's 'Defence' in action at the Battle of 1 June 1794 (BHC0474) from 1811. The vessel in the foreground has just lost her mizzen mast.
