English: The Beacon - Beacon Hill A beacon has existed in Southowram since at least the mid 16th century. According to Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion, Revd John Watson, a local historian of the 18th century mentions a deed of 1553 which refers to "le Bekyn super altitudine montis de Gletclif" (Gletcliff or Gledcliff being an older name for the hill).
