Description
English: The Beacon - Beacon Hill A beacon has existed in Southowram since at least the mid 16th century. According to Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion, Revd John Watson, a local historian of the 18th century mentions a deed of 1553 which refers to "le Bekyn super altitudine montis de Gletclif" (Gletcliff or Gledcliff being an older name for the hill). The beacon pan has been replaced several times over centuries - the current beacon is a relatively modern replacement. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~calderdalecompanion/mmb43.html
