irable to land the cable on theScottish mainland, and close to rail and road communication if at allpossible. From previous cable maintenance experience it was known that Firthof Lome which separates the island of Mull from the mainland was aquiet channel, little used by shipping or frequented bj^ trawlers andwith tidal streams which were not strong. Earlier passages of Post Officecable ships through the Firth had yielded a series of echo soundingsurveys which indicated that except for a distance of about 5 or 6 milesin the vicinity of the Isles of the Sea, the bottom was fairly regular.Several small bays on the mainland side of the Firth just south of Obanappeared from seaward to be very suitable landing sites and this wasconfirmed by a survey party, which selected a small bay localh namedPort Lathaich for the cable landing and site of the station. The fore .shore was mainly firm sand with outcroppings of rock whichcould be avoided easily when landing the cables. The seaward approach
Text Appearing After Image:
300 ROUTE SELECTION AND CABLE LAYING 301 was clear of danger and there was ample room to land two cables witha separation on the shore of some 30 yards. Port Lathaich is only about 3 miles by road from Oban. Additionalland cables would be necessary, however, to carry traffic to the maintrunk network. From a strategic point of view, although Oban mightonly just be considered a target area, the cable landing was sufficientlyremote to be relatively safe, especially if the cable terminal station wassited in the rocky hillside. To ascertain whether any serious chafing orcorrosion would result if cables were laid over the une\-en bottom inthe Firth, some 8 miles of coaxial cable with E type armoring were laidover the area and recovered after 2 years. There was no evidence ofany chafing or corrosion. It was therefore decided that the telephonecables should be routed through the Firth of Lome to the cable terminalstation site at Port Lathaich.
