editDescriptionThe Brickhall - fmr First Presbyterian Church - Clarence, New York - 20200924.jpg |
English: The Brickhall, 10750 Main Street at Salt Road, Clarence, New York, September 2020. Built in 1844, this is a good example of early Gothic Revival church architecture as filtered through the vernacular language of builders with a certain degree of familiarity with popular styles, but without formal architectural training. The result are simplified designs heavily reliant on the most prominent trademark features of their respective styles, such as the lancet arches that scrupulously crown each window as well as the front entrance, which is centrally located at the base of the projecting tower. Said tower also features some impressive corbelling and other ornamental masonry work, as well as a shallow-pitched pyramidal roof that's a replacement for the slender steeple more typical of the style, once the tallest in town, which was removed in 1957. Clarence First Presbyterian Church traces its history as a congregation to 1817, and met initially at the homes of its various members before the construction of this building. The church moved in 1957 to a site roughly two miles down Main Street near the present-day high school, whereupon the old building was pressed into a variety of different uses by subsequent private owners. Since 2016 it has been known as The Brickhall in the Hollow, an event space available for rent for weddings and other gatherings. |
