Summary edit

Description
English: The Chapel of Trinity College. This fine building with a classical temple front was designed by Sir William Chambers in 1798 to match his Examination Hall across the quadrangle. In my time at the college, this was a Protestant chapel. Although Catholics had been allowed since the 18thC to take degrees at TCD, the Dublin Diocese, in contrast with many other Irish Catholic dioceses forbad its adherents from attending the college. The ultra-conservative Archbishop of Dublin, John Charles McQuaid, known as the "Ruler of Ireland", would issue solemn warnings at Eastertide to be read at all masses in the diocese that enrollment by Dublin Catholics at Trinity College was a mortal sin and an excommunicable offence. This ban was eventually lifted in 1970 and today the college has two Roman Catholic chaplains and masses are regularly celebrated in the chapel.
