The Column of Constantine in Çemberlitaş, comprises six cylindrical marble pieces held together with metal rings. It was taken from the Temple of Apollo in Rome to Constantinople in 330 A.D., on the order of Constantine I, to celebrate the new capital of the empire. In 1081 the column was partially damaged by a bolt of lightning. Manuel Komnenos I restored the column, adding the marble corinthian head and installing a large cross. After the conquest of İstanbul, the cross was removed. It was lightly damaged by fire in 1672 and the marbles and metal work were restored in 1701. In the early republican period the buildings around the column were demolished in order to give it more prominence.

Çemberlitaş Sütunu, taşlarla örülmüş bir kaidenin üstünde duran, araları metal çemberlerle tutturulmuş silindir şeklindeki altı mermer parçanın oluşturduğu bir dikilitaştır. 330’da İmparator I. Konstantin’in emriyle, Roma’daki Apollon Tapınağı’ndan sökülerek Konstantinopolis’e getirildi. 1081’de yıldırım isabet etmesi sonucu yandı. I. Manuel Komnenos tarafından onarılarak üstüne, günümüzde hâlen yerinde duran mermer korint başlık kondu.
