The Willem Barents (ship), The Dutch Arctic expedition - Captain Antonius de Bruyne was appointed an officer on September 16, 1859. He was commander of the first polar expedition with the Willem Barents from May 6 to October 12, 1878 and of the second polar expedition from June 4 to October 22, 1879. On October 4, 1880, Antonius de Bruyne became inspector of pilotage, buoyage, beaconing and lighting at Hellevoetsluis and then held this position in Rotterdam from August 1, 1883 to July 1, 1897. Retired titularly on July 1, 1897 as captain at sea. From 1881-1884 he was a member of the municipal council of Hellevoetsluis.
