Description
English: Instructions for making an "egg witch", which was apparently a primitive sort of kaleidoscope made from an eggshell

"The egg witch is an interesting gift for a youngster to prepare for an Easter remembrance. First blow the egg, perforate with a sharp needle a circle about each end of the egg, as is shown in Fig 1. In this way, the ends may be removed smoothly. Cleanse and dry the shell thoroughly. Take a piece of black paper and across it fasten three strips of glass, each two inches long and one-half inch wide (see Fig 2). Fold the pieces of glass into a triangle by bringing the outer edges of the two outside strips of glass together and fastening them by pasting the strip of dark paper to the edge of the outer strip of glass.

Take a sheet of paper, not too stiff, cut from it a circle one inch in diameter, as shown in Fig. 4, cut from the center of the circle a triangular opening slightly smaller than the triangle formed at each end of the triangular cylinder just made. Take a piece of glass, shaped triangularly (Fig 3), slightly larger than the triangle in the disk of paper, paste this over the triangle in the disk. Make two of these circles, fasten one, with its three-cornered glass window, over one end of the cylinder by turning down the edges of the circle and pasting smoothly against the end. Into the cylinder place tiny bits of colored glass and close the other end as the first was closed. When the paste has dried, slide the cylinder carefully into the shell. Covering the circular dish with red glazed paper cut after the pattern shown in Fig. 5, paste the paper smooth over each end of the egg. Fig. 6 shows the witch completed. Place the eye at one end of the egg and turn the egg, and the bits of colored glass will take weird, fantastic shapes."
