Description
English: The Eisenhower Centre This peculiar structure in Chenies Street attracted my attention because it looks so discordant with its surroundings. Only subsequently did I discover that it is a deep-level shelter from WW2, equipped as General Eisenhower's headquarters, and later used as an army transit camp until a serious fire closed the camp on the night of May 21st 1956. Officials were alarmed by the fire and the deep tunnels beneath were no longer considered suitable for accommodation. They are now used to store films and video tape.

The building consists of two concrete blocks, one a circular 'pillbox' and the smaller one octagonal. They are joined by a long, thin, rectangular brick building, which is what can be seen in the image, and are painted cream and red. This is the main entrance facing Alfred Place.

In front on the right stands a war memorial to the Territorial Army County of London Regiment, known as The Rangers, disbanded in 1938.
